While market participants spent the week observing bitcoin BTC $82,563.48 fluctuate above $80,000 amidst vital U.S. inflation metrics, a regulatory decision by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission attracted considerably less attention.
The SEC sanctioned the listing of binary options linked to key performance indicators (KPIs) for 23 publicly traded American corporations. These benchmarks incorporate trading volume on cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (COIN), user numbers alongside revenue at Robinhood Markets (HOOD), and bitcoin output levels at mining enterprise MARA Holdings (MARA).
Eleanor Terrett, presenter of Crypto America, noted on X, “For crypto, this creates a new way to trade crypto-linked company performance beyond betting directly on BTC’s price. The SEC approved this specific securities-options structure, while leaving room for differently structured contracts to fall under CFTC jurisdiction.”
A binary option represents the most fundamental options contract, permitting participants to wager on a straightforward yes-or-no proposition, such as whether the trading volume of Coinbase will surpass a defined threshold by a designated date.
SEC Chairman Paul Atkins endorsed a rule modification submitted by Cboe Global Markets, according to an announcement dated October 13. These instruments are cash-settled and European-style, implying they can be exercised solely upon expiration. Settlement will rely on figures from corporate SEC disclosures rather than data presented in earnings presentations.
Cboe intends to list these agreements this month, with Robinhood anticipated to serve as the initial brokerage delivering them to retail traders. Trading cannot commence until the clearing house, Cboe Clear U.S., receives provisional registration, and a separate application remains pending.
Atkins stated that this approval does not affect comparable contracts monitored by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), including those hosted on prediction market platform Kalshi. He expressed that inter-agency turf battles have impeded innovation for decades, characterizing the endorsement as a reflection of “a new spirit of harmony, innovation, and investor choice.”
Concerning market conditions, analysts stay optimistic regarding bullish outlooks following bitcoin’s BTC $82,563.48 resilient defense of its 50-day simple moving average support throughout the week. Stay alert!
