On Wednesday, Deutsche Bank announced plans to roll out a bitcoin safekeeping offering for European corporate and institutional customers within the current year.
The German financial giant stated that the rollout depends on finishing the necessary regulatory approval schedule.
This declaration from Deutsche Bank arrives amid a wave of major global banks introducing cryptocurrency safekeeping offerings. Over the preceding year and a half, institutions such as BNY Mellon, State Street, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bank, and Citigroup have rolled out or pledged direct crypto custody.
Gerald Podobnik, who serves as Co-Head of Corporate Bank at Deutsche Bank, remarked in a public release that digital assets do not supplant traditional finance, but rather serve as a vital supplement to it.
Podobnik further noted that they view these assets as novel pathways capable of operating alongside current market frameworks, while leveraging the security, safety, and reliability offered by licensed financial establishments. He explained that their objective is to deliver a safe and compliant access point to this expanding sector, and that the offering will expand in response to customer needs, oversight standards, and the organization’s risk tolerance.
Germany’s premier lending institution also noted that it intends to back a “selected range of digital assets” alongside bitcoin, which will incorporate stablecoins.
An official statement further specified that the selection of supported tokens might grow down the line, dependent upon customer interest alongside internal product clearance, risk evaluation, and compliance procedures. Additionally, tokenized financial products are part of the strategic plan.
Initial reports revealed that the institution was developing bitcoin safekeeping capabilities slated for 2025. Sources indicated that the German banking titan would integrate the safekeeping infrastructure of Bitpanda while collaborating with Taurus to construct the platform for corporate and institutional users.
Only last month, Citi announced it would roll out a bitcoin custody solution this year, permitting institutional traders to store traditional holdings and bitcoin under a unified architecture instead of requiring distinct platforms.
