Ethereum and Base are preparing to adopt distinct account abstraction protocols following the breakdown of negotiations to establish a unified standard last week.
Interoperability guidelines took a backseat to the primary objectives of each network, forcing both ecosystems to pursue independent paths and shifting extra responsibilities onto wallet providers, according to Derek Chiang, a founding member and researcher at Ethlabs as well as co-author of Ethereum’s EIP-8141 proposal, in a Monday post on X.
This split may force wallet creators to accommodate distinct transaction formats to guarantee a seamless user experience across different blockchains. Account abstraction enables programmable guidelines for validating transactions and settling fees.
Ethereum is currently advancing Frame Transactions through EIP-8141 as a marquee feature of its Hegotá upgrade, which aims to introduce native account abstraction and build a pathway toward post-quantum security. Meanwhile, Base is working on its own native account abstraction system using Keystore under EIP-8130, which is presently active on a devnet.
This divergence additionally underscores the conflicting priorities that exist between layer-1 and layer-2 distributed networks. Chiang noted that L1 chains place greater emphasis on censorship resistance, anti-capture attributes, open-source compliance, privacy, and security mechanisms, which leads them to prefer different account frameworks, whereas performance-oriented L2 networks gravitate more toward specifications like EIP-8130.
The investigator suggested that this division will not automatically produce a negative result, seeing as both Ethereum and Base are now completely unrestricted to push account abstraction innovation to the absolute limit in alignment with their individual strategies.
Ethereum engineers could kick off the rollout of Hegotá near the end of 2026 immediately following Glamsterdam, widely regarded as one of the most vital upgrades of the period. Glamsterdam is tailored to boost throughput, reinforce the L1 base layer, and simplify network usability, with a mainnet debut targeted for the latter half of 2026 based on Ethereum’s official roadmap.
