HSBC is introducing RedCoin wallets to individuals using PayMe, with future intentions to enable tokenized investment purchases and scale into institutional use cases.
HSBC has rolled out its inaugural Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, named RedCoin (RCHKD), intended for merchant settlements and peer-to-peer transfers via its PayMe platform.
Over 3.3 million PayMe customers will gain the ability to activate stablecoin storage inside the application over the coming days, as revealed by the banking institution on Friday.
RedCoin has been engineered to maintain a one-to-one redemption parity with the Hong Kong dollar. Custodial operations for the digital asset are managed by HSBC Digital Assets Custody.
This retail deployment follows the August launch of Anchorpoint’s HKDAP stablecoin via HashKey Exchange, which initially catered to accredited institutions and professional traders.
HSBC secured its stablecoin issuance authorization in April alongside Anchorpoint Financial—a collaborative enterprise supported by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT. Both entities constituted the inaugural group granted approval under the legislative framework for stablecoins in Hong Kong.
The banking institution stated that it intends to integrate RedCoin wallets into the HSBC HK Mobile Banking application later in the year, granting account holders access to purchase tokenized assets, which includes a novel share class associated with its Hong Kong dollar money market fund.
Furthermore, HSBC intends to broaden the utility of RedCoin to encompass wholesale corporate and institutional scenarios.
