HSBC has released its inaugural Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, named RedCoin, as the financial institution further broadens its footprint in the blockchain and digital asset sector.
As one of the trio of commercial banks in Hong Kong permitted to print HKD banknotes, HSBC revealed that RedCoin (RCHKD) becomes accessible on its PayMe application beginning Friday.
The press release notes that consumers will gain the ability to set up a digital currency wallet within the application over the next few days to conduct peer-to-peer transfers and settle transactions with upwards of 100,000 vendors utilizing PayMe.
"Capital, property, and data are transitioning from legacy systems into continuous, information-dense, and increasingly programmable digital networks," stated Maggie Ng, HSBC’s Hong Kong chief executive officer.
John O’Neill, who serves as HSBC’s managing director for digital assets and currencies, mentioned that the institution intends to launch additional offerings shortly and broaden its reach into wholesale enterprise and institutional scenarios.
The debut of RedCoin expands upon HSBC’s wider involvement in digital currencies. The bank has additionally taken part in distributed ledger initiatives led by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, which encompass the e-HKD testing phase and Project Ensemble.
Furthermore, the financial institution provides tokenized bonds for institutional participants through HSBC Orion, the HSBC Gold Token for everyday consumers, alongside the HSBC Tokenised Deposit Service designed for large-scale transactions.
Hong Kong has actively worked to position itself as a digital asset center. Its Stablecoins Ordinance officially went into force in August 2025, establishing a regulatory authorization system for fiat-backed stablecoin creators.
During April 2026, the HKMA granted initial stablecoin authorizations to HSBC alongside Anchorpoint Financial, which is a partnership involving Standard Chartered, HKT, and Animoca Brands. Anchorpoint initiated a staged institutional release for its HKDAP stablecoin in August.
